Hvis du gerne vil have et marsvin, og det gælder, uanset hvilket dyr du gerne vil have, så er det ens pligt, at man læser så meget som muligt om dyrets levevilkår, rytmer og behov for mad. På dem måde kan starte ud med at have de bedst mulige vilkår for dyret. En vigtig faktor er: Er dyret et flokdyr, eller foretrækker det helst at bo alene? – Hvis du undersøgte lidt om marsvin, så vil du også hurtigt finde ud af, at marsvin er et flokdyr, og derfor bør man aldrig kun købe ét marsvin, men minimum to. Køb et bur, hvor der er masser af plads til at løbe på.

Mad

Dyret skal naturligvis have mad. Men det er forskelligt fra dyr til dyr, hvilken type mad, den skal have.

Størstedelen af en marsvins kost skal bestå af bladgrønt, det vil sige blade og grønt, som indeholder C-vitaminer, såsom mælkebøtter, blade fra alle typer kål, blomskålsblade, persille, selleri, ruccola og meget mere.

Den næststørste del af marsvinet kost, består af hø. Hø er en nødvendighed for et marsvin for at holde fordøjelsen igang, samt at det slider på deres tænder, så de ikke vokser vildt.

Marsvin kan varierer i størrelser og i pelsmængde. Nogle marsvin har kort pels, men andre kan have meget lang pels. Lange pelse kræver, at de bliver børstet, ellers kan det hurtigt gå hen og blive til filtklumper! Man skal også huske, at marsvins negle vokser, og de skal klippes regelmæssigt, det kræver en neglesaks, hvis man ikke får dem klippet hos dyrelægen. Nogle negle kan godt kroge, hvortil det kan være ekstra svært at få klippet den korrekte mængde af.
